Cradley Heath Salvation Army Band’s contribution to this Sunday’s evening meeting at The Salvation Army in Cradley Heath will be the March: Jubilee Day by world-renowned brass composer, Ray Steadman-Allen.
Ray Steadman-Allen joined the Music Editorial Department of The Salvation Army following the end of the Second World War and at this time was also a trombonist with The International Staff Band and Bandmaster of the Tottenham Citadel Band.
He became a Salvation Army officer (minister) in 1949.
Much of his music as a composer was ahead of its time, to the point that it was sometimes considered unacceptable to the listener. He has been instrumental in guiding Salvation Army music particularly when he led the International Music Editorial Department (1967 to 1980).
Besides well over 200 brass band works published by The Salvation Army, he has written numerous choral works.
In 2005, Ray was admitted to The Order Of the Founder, the highest honour that The Salvation Army can bestow on a member.
This march refers to the Day of Jubilee, a biblical directive to proclaim, in the fiftieth year, liberty to all Israelites in bondage to any of their countrymen. The trumpet of the jubilee would be sounded.
Because the concept of liberty was so often included in the expression of slave spirituals, Ray takes four – Swing low, sweet chariot, I’ve got a robe, Deep river and The day of jubilee and uses them throughout the march.
Why not join us for our meetings this Sunday at 10:30am and 6:00pm at The Salvation Army, Meredith Street, Cradley Heath B64 5EP?
